Wecareforourkids!WeopenourlargeandcomfortableResourceCentre,from7.30amto5.30pmMondaytoThursdayandonFridaysfrom7.30amto4.00pm,asasafeandinvitingplaceforstudentstostudyincomfortwithafreecoffee,teaorMilobeforeandafterschool!Thisareaisalsoagreatbackupifparentsarerunninglateforapickup.

RatherthanbeingallocatedaFormorHomeGroupTeacher,ourstudentsselecttheirownLearningMentorasthepersontoassistthemwithschoolissuesandhelpthemsetgoalsfortheirlearning.Becauseparentsknowthattheirchildlikesthispersonandthatthisstaffmemberha*adeapersonalcommitmenttohelpandassisttheirchild,thisobviouslyreducesthereluctanceparentscansometimesfeelatsecondaryschooltoraiseissues.WearenotawareofanotherschoolinVictoriawhooffersthis.

Wehavetakentheconsciousdecisiontoremaina*alllearningcommunity.Ouraimistoachieveandmaintainatotalsizeof650students,comprisingonehundredstudentsperyearlevelandfiftyinternationalstudents.Aswedonotwishtoexceedthisnumberofstudentsateachyearlevel,wewillreachthiseventualsizein2017.

Whyremaina*allschool?

Simplybecauseweknowthat*allschoolscandeliveramorepersonalisedlearningexperienceandbettercarethanbigschoolscaneverdo.Don'tjusttakeourwordforitthough,tryGoogling"researchonschoolsize”andseewhattheevidencesays.Theresultsreallyareoverwhelming!

Attitudedeterminesaltitude

Ourattitudeisdifferent.Weinviteyoutobeaneducationalpartnerwithusintheeducationalprocess.Wehaveasayingthateverythingisnegotiableand"yes”isthedefault.Thatisnottosaythatweareinanywayslackorlaissez-fairewhenitcomestostandards.Wesimplyofferstudentsandtheirparentsandguardianstheopportunitytobeinvolvedinmakingsuggestionsanddecisionsabouttheireducationalexperience.

Eachchildisdifferent,asaretheirparents'viewsonhomework,andthiswillalsodependonwhetherthestudentislikelytopursueaUniversitydegree,atradequalificationorisstillundecided.Weacceptthattherearedifferingviewsontheimportanceofhomeworkattheyoungeryearlevelsandrespectandcanaccommodatetheviewsofparents.ThosestudentstakingpartinVCEareexpectedandrequiredtocompletehomeworksoasnottonegativelyimpactontherestoftheclassbystudentsbeingunpreparedorbehind.

Monitoringhomeworkcanbearealissueforsomefamilies.WehaveaprogramcalledRemoteMonitoredHomeworkwherestudentsinYear7-9togetherwiththeirparentsnegotiateacertainamountofhomeworkthatwillbedoneacrosstheweekinadditiontothatwhichissetbyclassteachers.TCusesarangeofeLearningsoftwaretohelpbuildskillsandidentifygapsinknowledgeinthekeyareasofLiteracyandNumeracy.ThiscommitmentisthenmonitoredcentrallybytheCollegeandcommunicatedregularlytoparents.

TemplestoweCollegewasthefirstschoolinVictoriatooffertheinnovativeYourTutorprogramwherestudentscanconnectwithaliveTutorlocatedaroundAustraliabetween3.00pmand10.00pmsixnightsaweektoreceiveassistancewiththeirhomework,assignmentsandstudytechniques.TheseTutorsarepostgraduatestudents,retiredorexistingteachersandcanassistwithanythingfromassistancewithaYear7EnglishessaytothehardestYear12SpecialistMathsproblem.Thefeedbackfromourstudentsandtheirrelievedparentshasbeenverypositive.

Adynamicandfuturefocusedcurriculum

AnewengagingcurriculumfocusingheavilyonimprovingliteracyandnumeracyinYears7to9whichasweallknowarethebuildingblockstostudentsachievingsuccessinthelateryears.

Tohelpusdecidewhatelectivestoofferweaskedthestudentswhattheywantedtostudy.WenowofferComputerGamingDesignincooperationwithoureducationalpartner,LatrobeUniversity,WorkingwithAnimals,GeekStudieswithafocusonrobotics,Textiles,FoodTechnologyjusttonameafew.

Whereastudentor*allgroupofstudentshasaparticularinterestareaweencouragethemtopursuethisthroughtheSpiceItUpprogram.StaffwillassiststudentstoplanandcarryouttheirownactivityorIndividualLearningProject(ILP)aroundtheirparticularareaorinterestthatfallsoutsidetheexistingcurriculum.Wheneverstudentsdevelopaproposalforanactivitywitheducationalvaluewewilldoourbesttosupporttheminmakingithappen.RememberatTemplestowe,"Yes”isthedefault.

Wehaveagenuineemphasisonpersonalisedlearningsothatstudentshavegreaterownershipandenjoymentinwhattheyarestudying.ManyschoolsclaimthisbutIwouldactuallyencourageyoutoaskthemhowtheyactuallydothis?AtTemplestowe,rightfromYear7,studentscanchoose30%oftheircoursethrougharangeofstudentdirectedelectives.Wealsoencourageourmoreselfdirectedstudentstodesigntheirownindividuallearningprojects,ILPsandsupporttheminthisprocess.

In2011weintroducedthreedifferentstreamsatYear7withthestudentsdividedonthebasisoftheirpreferredlearningstyle,directinstruction,collaborativelearningandindependentacceleratedlearning.Practicallythi*eansthatstudentswillbetaughtinwaystheylikeandwillbegivenadditionalsupportduringactivitiesthataretaughtinwaysthatmaycomelessnaturallytothem.Howisthatforpersonalisedlearning!

HavingthreeyearcohortsratherthantwostudyingVCEtogetherwithourfortytofiftyInternationalStudent*eansthatwecanofferatrulybroadbasedVCEwithalargesubjectchoice.

WeofferaselectentryVCALclass(VictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning)atYear10to12wherestudentswantingtopursueatradegainskillsinWorkRelatedskills,LiteracyandNumeracythrougharangeofpracticalhandsonactivities.
