MrBurbidgefoundareportintheWilliamstownAdvertiserofOctober31914thatsaid“TheGrammarSchoolopenedonThursdayasanelementaryhighschool.”Theboroughcouncilandtheschoolcouncilofthetimegavethedepartment3000pounds,itsbuildingandfouracresoflandinPascoSt,apointnotedinAHistoryofStateEducationinVictoria,publishedin1922.

WilliamstownHighSchoolhascarriedthemotto“HoldFast”sinceitsinception.Theschool’sfirstheadmaster,MrF.W.Johnson,revealeditsoriginswhentheschoolcelebrateditsjubileein1965.
Whentheschoolwasbeingestablished,MrJohnsonsuggestedthemotto“Don’tDrift”becausehewasconcernedaboutthenumbersofstudentsdriftingawayfromeducation.However,thethenVictorianDirectorofEducation,MrFrankTate,recommendedthemorepositive“HoldFast”.
