Establishedin1919,DandenongHighSchoolisoneoftheoldest,largestandmostculturallydiverseSecondaryschoolsinthestate.ItissituatedintheSouthEasternRegioninDandenongalowsocioeconomiccommunity(SFOdensityof.72)withahighrefugeepopulation.Theschoolhasover2000studentsandishighlymulticulturalwith78Nationalitiesand80differentlanguagegroupsrepresented.Thereare29indigenousstudents,12internationalstudentsand80%ofstudentsspeakalanguageotherthanEnglishathome.Ofourlargerefugeepopulation,25%ofthosestudentshaveexperiencedinterruptedschoolingornoschoolingatallintheirnativecountry.Theschoolcommunityistransientinnaturewiththeoriginofrefugeeschangingovertimeandbringingdifferingneedsandnewculturalchallengeswiththem.AnextensiveESLProgram,includinganESLTransitionProgramsupportsstudentslearningattheschoolandliteracyisakeyschoolfocus.Aniconiceducationalfacilityinthecommunity,in2005DandenongHighSchoolmergedwith2verydifferentschoolsofvaryingsizes,CleelandSecondaryCollege(550students)andDovetonSecondaryCollege(175students).

SelectionCriteria

Despitetheirclosegeographicallocationeachschoolwasuniqueintheirculture,theelementofthecommunitytheyservedandtheirapproachtoteachingandlearning.In2005thedataateachschoolshowedincompletenessineducationalprovision,growingconcernsregardingstudentoutcomesinliteracyandnumeracyandalackofpathwayofferings.Theschoolsrecognisedthattheywouldneedtousethemergeasacatalysttodevelopa“newschool”withaninnovativeteachingandlearningmodel,stateoftheartfacilitiesandadynamic,supportiveandengaginglearningenvironmentthatwouldaddressthechangingcommunity,theneedsofitsblendedcohortofstudentsanditssharedunderstandingofhowstudentslearn.Theschooliscurrentlyundergoinga$45millionbuildingprogram(Stage2iscompletewithStage3duetobeginthisyear).

Theschoolhasanenrolmentof2000studentswithapproximately330ateachyearlevelanditsverticalstructureisunique.Inordertoensurestudentsdevelopa“senseofbelonging”andconnectednesstotheschool,givenitssize,studentsarehousedin7HouseBuildingsononesite.Eachhouseholds300studentsfromYears7-12,25teachingstaff,aHouseLeadershipTeamof3andanattendanceofficer.InYears7-10studentslearnprimarilyinthepurposefullydesignedandICTrichlearningspaceswithintheHousefortheircorelearningmovingtospecialistlearningspaceswhenrequired.Studentshavetheopportunitytodevelopmeaningfulrelationshipswiththeteamsofteacherswithinthehouse,parentscancommunicateonaregularbasiswiththeHouseLeadershipTeamandtheverticalstructureencouragespeertutoringandmentoringacrossYears7-12.

Theschoolhasaninnovativeapproachtocurriculumandoperatesacollaborativelearningmodel.InYears7–10studentslearningroupsof50studentswithateamof3teacherswhoplan,teachandassesstogetherforEnglish/Humanities,Maths/Science,Health/PEandLOTE.InordertoensureconsistencyacrosstheHousesteachingTeamsfollowcurriculumframeworksavailableonthenetworkforeachYearLevel.Thereisafocusondiscoverybasedlearningandstudentinquiryandstudentsareencouragedtobeindependentlearners,self-motivatedandcuriousabouttheworldaroundthem.Allstudentsinyears7-12havepersonalisedlearningaspartoftheirtimetableanddevelopanindividuallearningplanintheformofadigitalportfolio. DuringeachtermstudentsinYears7-10developtheirowninquirybasedonanessentialquestionandexploretheirideasduringimmersionactivities.

TheschoolhasanacceleratedlearningprograminYears7-10andoffersawiderangeofelectiveoptionsandextensivecurriculumopportunitiesintheSeniorYears.StudentscanselectnumerousVCEstudies,aVCALprogramandtheschoolalsooffersVETsubjects.ThecompletionoftheTradeTrainingcentrein2012withChisholmTAFEwillresultinevenmorediverseeducationalopportunitiesforstudents.StronglinkswithanumberoftertiaryinstitutionsincludingtheAccessProgramatDeakinUniversityprovidestudentswithexcellentpathwayplanningresourcesandsupportandadynamicCareersteamdeliveraneffectiveandfarreachingpathwayprograminYears9–12.TheschoolalsorunsworkexperienceandtheBeaconPrograminYear10andmaintainsstronglinkswithSELLEN,localbusinessesandindustryproviders.

AnexperiencedWellBeingTeamincludingaChaplainandseveralSocialWorkerssupportstaffandstudentsandworkinaliaisonrolewiththeHouses.TheyalsoofferextensiveWellBeingProgramsthroughouttheyearforarangeofstudentgroupsdependentonstudentsneed.

DandenongHighSchoolemploys175teachingstaffand65non–teachingstaff.Thereisalowstaffturnoverwithahigherproportionofexpertteachersbutinthelast2yearstheschoolhasstrategicallyemployedalargenumberofgraduatestaffinkeylearningareas.Theschoolhasadistributedleadership modelincludingtheLeadershipExecutive(Principal,AssociatePrincipalforCurriculumandAssociatePrincipalforCurriculumImplementation),7HouseLeaders(AP)eachwithawholeschoolcurriculumresponsibility,3CurriculumImplementationAPsand14LeadingteacherpositionsconsistingofAssistantHouseleaders,CrossHouseCurriculumLeadersandCurriculumImplementationLeaders.EachexpertteacherundertakesaleadershiproleeitherwithintheHouseorwholeschool.TwoCurriculumLeadershipTeamstheCurriculumCommitteeandtheCurriculumPlanningTeamdrivecurriculumdevelopmentacrosstheschooleachwithavisioningandimplementationrolebuteachwithadifferentfocusandeachledbytheAssociatePrincipalforCurriculum.

TheschoolalsohasanactivestudentvoicewithstudentleadershipprogramsofferedatYears10,11and12.StudentscanholdformalleadershippositionsinYear12orbeanSRCmemberrepresentingtheirHouseinYears7-12.TheSRCisdynamic,fullofenergyandhasakeyroleintheschoolandtheYear12studentleader*eetfortnightlywiththeSchoolExecutiveLeadershipteam.Theschoolalsooffer*anysportingandperformingartsopportunitiesthroughtheHouseShieldCompetitionincludingHouseChorales,SwimmingandAthletics.EachYearthereis aPerformingArtsGala,anannualproductionandin2011studentshashadtheopportunityofparticipatinginWOTOperarunbyOperaAustralia.TheschoolhasalsorecentlyreceivedanumberofawardsintheArts,MediaandVisualCommunication. AlunchtimeactivitiesprogramisavailabletostudentsandtheschoolhasaDebatingClub.
